The glass clear adriatic sea and the warm Mediterranean climate are the main reasons people come to visit Croatia. There is nothing more relaxing than spending the whole day at the beach with a good book. If you prefer something more active - most beaches offer various types of water sports.
Porporela Beach
Swim where the locals swim
Porporela beach is situated on the city walls to the southern side. The best way to find the beach is to enter the old port and follow the path around the harbour walls after that you can’t miss it. In the true sense of the word this isn’t really a beach as there isn’t any shallow water.
Big pebbles
In the Dubrovnik area there are many tucked away beaches that are beautiful and free of the crowds. This week’s edition is the beach “Veliki Žali” or a direct translation into English “Large Pebbles”, the name of the beach makes it obvious that it’s not a sandy beach.
Šunj - sandy beach
Lopud, 7 nautical miles northwest of Dubrovnik, is a part of the Elafiti islands and Kolocep and the most developed tourist place on Elafiti. The island can be reached by a boat from the new Dubrovnik's harbour Gruž. Lopud is a car free island.
Banje Beach
Banje, is probably the most famous beach in Dubrovnik. This glorious pebble beach is located a stones throw away from the Old City and offers outstanding views over the ancient walls. In the warmer months the beach is a hive of activity with both locals and tourists enjoying the clear blue Adriatic Sea.
St. Jacob beach
St. Jacob beach is situated directly opposite the Old City of Dubrovnik and offers magnificent views especially in the late afternoon when the sun sets over the city walls. The beach has parking above it and the only down side is the amount of steps down to the beach which number around 250.
Hawaii beach - Orašac
Orašac is a picturesque little village 12 km north of Dubrovnik. In the centre of the village to the sea side you will see signs towards a beach called “Hawaii.” If you are driving from Dubrovnik then the turning is on your left near the bus stop. A step road winds down to the beach and parking can sometimes be difficult.
Room to walk
Walking in Croatia is a wonderful experience, whether it be a gentle walk along a sun soaked beach, a promenade under palm trees or a hike up a mountain. Croatia is so suited to this activity it is impossible to advise where best to go - well, everywhere is best. Hundreds of kilometres of marked paths are at the disposal of walking lovers, from the less demanding to the hardly passable.
