Dubrovnik's social network

gruz marketIf you want a feel for how the local people in Dubrovnik live then a visit to one of the two markets in the city will give you an insight. The marketplace is Dubrovnik’s answer to the social networks now so popular, but these are offline places to meet. The market place in the centre of the old city of Dubrovnik is situated on the Gundulić Square.

In the morning hours the marketplace is a source of fruit and vegetables, as well as a few rumours, for the city but then in the afternoon it changes and becomes a market for souvenirs. Some good bargains can be found as well as some great local produce, well worth a visit. The morning market is open from 7 o’clock and closes around 1 o’clock in the afternoon when the souvenir market opens. Check out some of the handicrafts available in the afternoon, ideal presents for loved ones or as a gift to yourself.

The other market is located in the Gruž suburb of the city near the main port. Business here starts very early as the restaurants come and buy their fruit and vegetables for the day. Although grocery shopping is the backbone of the market there is also a well stocked fish market that sells fresh fish – the catch of the day.
