Mljet
Mljet is an island that leaves you short of superlatives. Its sheer natural beauty is unsurpassed in the region and beyond. The national park, that covers around a third of the island, contains two natural lakes that even have an island in them, so one could say that Mljet has an island on an island.
The rich natural history of Mljet, the untouched beauty, the peace and tranquillity, the feeling that you’ve travelled to another place and time are all experiences that you’ll feel on visiting Mljet. Thick forests of pine cover the whole island and the national park on the western section of the island is a rhapsody of green and blue. Two connected salty lakes, Malo Jezero (Small Lake) and Veliko Jezero (Great Lake), are truly nature's masterpieces and they fall inside the boundaries of the national park. The small forested island of St. Mary in the Big Lake, within the National Park, is the location for a 12th century Benedictine monastery. Walking paths covered with forest follow the lakes shoreline or you can hire a bike or even a small boat to explore further. The island is like a natural wellness centre, nature’s way of giving you a massage.
Through the ages many people have been tempted by the delights of the island. The apostle Paul mentions this island on his voyage through Adriatic and visits the island on his way to Rome. The ancient Greek poet Homer wrote about this island in Odyssey, as the hero Odyssey sailed in this region. And more recently thousands of tourists visit the island to experience for themselves the natural beauty.
Mljet can be reached by a daily ferry service that operates from the Port of Dubrovnik (Gruž harbour) or by a car ferry service that operates from Prapratno on the Pelješac peninsula. The first port of call for the ferry on Mljet is Sobra and then onto the smaller village of Polače where a van will take you to the national park.
Mljet is a “must see” destination for all visitors to Dubrovnik. The beauty of the island is unrivalled and the hospitality of the locals is second to none.
